Istanbul

Video : Cycling Siberia in winter solo

The 5th of March 2008, I left France to cycle around the world. This is a small documentary about the first leg of my journey.

I start in Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia, Macedonia, Greece and Turkey. Then i crossed the iranian desert Dasht-e-kavir in the hottest month of summer with temperature much between 50° and 55° celcius and even more. I arrived in Central asia trough Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyztan and Kazakhztan.

This part shows Siberia and far eatern russia in winter from november to february 2008, with temperatures under -40° celcius, camping in my tent, battling hills in siberia and dirty roads.

Unfortunatly, i couldn’t film the most difficult part of siberia when it was very cold, lonely or the very bad road for exemple…

You can read more on my website http://www.bastiendemange.com

I will not stay long here and will train very hard do make my body stronger. This can not finish like this. This is not where i belong. Anyway, I am working on the small moovie of the first part of the trip, the writing, Photos and presentation.

and more important and much more stupid, i lost my mobile phone in china, wich means that i don’t have anymore the number phone of people i met on the road :(

In the meanwhile, here is a nice clip of Katie Melua, 9 millions bicycle in beijing.

What is a chinese communist now ?

Few day ago, we were talking about comunism in china. I asked carrie, a 20 years-old chinese girl to tell me more about what is comunism in china nowadays. I was interested to know what young people think about it.

Here is her answer :

I have been thinking about this question for a few days, and would like to tell something in my mind about chinese communists around me.

My parents are communist. But none of them believe in communism. I have told you that my dad is working for government. It is impossible that you are not a communist but a government official.Actually few people who are communist at my dad’s age believe in communism. Most of them are forced to be. If you are working for other field like companies, things will be much more easier but you are going to lose many chances on promotions, salary compensation and so on. You know everythings here in China are controled by the government except people’s mind deep inside. As what you said, everyone has to survive. So its understandable, they sufferd a lot from the history, and had to make a compromise.

Young people nowadays treat « communist»  as a honour. Our history book never mention the real history. So young people doesnt know how many terrible things communists have done. There are two ways for being a communist in university. One is you are good student who have passed all of the exams. The other is you have a very good relationship with your tutor. I think thats why young people treat communists special–they have to be good students. And few of them, I mean young communists, believe in communism. It has nothing to do with religion. Anyway, none of them are forced to be. Actually you have to be in competition with many other students for this honour.

Ok, thats all. I think you should know that why I wont marry or even date a communist.

Well, I hope you can learn more about our culture now.

It is Very interesting answer. I did not expect this at all ! Thanks Xueqing Zhong

Roxana Saberi and iranian governement

I cross iran last summer during 2 month. I found this an incredible country due to the people and the hospitality.

But i am not fool, i knew that the governement there is quite terrible. Freedom is not in the dictionary yet. And even less for woman. The scarf is compulsory and police do not care taking girls in the police car because some girls let few hairs outside.

article_photo_1236349912547-1-0

Roxana saberi, an americano- iran journalist, just got put in jail for 8 years for spying for american. Reporters sans frontières try to do it best to mobilize organization.
2 others journalist of current.tv are also in big trouble there.

Freedom of press and people is more important than money or good relation and we have to do everything to make this stop. people in iran are scared by the governement and don’t want to react too much. the cultural revolution let some big marks there, and people are not ready to fight again yet.

I join everybody to support Roxana, Euna Lee and Laura Ling.

update : roxana got relaxed today monday 11 may. she is free but not disculped. she will go soon to USA and be safe there

Recovering in Sanya, China and times for decision

I am still in sanya, near the beach trying to recover from my back problem. Going to the beach is quite nice here. Lots of russian people and chinese tourist.

p1040373.jpg

Chinese tourist really feels in hollydays if they wear those crazy hawaii-chinese shirts and shorts. Lots of fun. You see groups of people wearing exactly the same clothes, same color. But, they look happy, and that is the important things. and i have lots of fun watching them. take this for arrogance if you want but, it is funny.

I am thinking about china. I don’t feel this country incredibly hospitable, the culture is disapearing as fast as the building goes up in every city. The food, the tai chi is still there. i don’t know more about china… I hear a lot of hello, and asking about my nationality but it does stop here. There is not much interaction with people, because they or we don’t want to make the effort to try to comunicate.

They do engage the conversation but you feel alone anyway.
they : « Hello»
Me : « ni Hao»
they : « something nali»  (where do you come from ?)
me : « fagua»  (france)
On this they start to talk to you in chinese… So :
me »  wo bu mingbai»  « tim be do»

After that. They take a pen and a paper and write what they ask on a paper… i have no clue about chinese…

But no problem for them, they write something else like if you would understand the second word… ahahha

One time in the supermarket, i was looking for a product. They told me to write it in a paper.. funny. I wrote in french(english would have been the same anyway) and they had no clue about our latin characters. funny…

Maybe my back injuries make me feeling this not on purpose. maybe i have a bad mood those days i don’t know. but it is what i feel when i travel by bicycle.

But what is it true, is that they really enjoy to see a foreigner. they stop walking, sometimes working to look at me and say hello. They sometimes just saw foreigner on television. So i always try to smile and say hello, but it is sometimes difficult. they seems happy to see a foreigner.

Anyway, everything is not bad about china. I like this country, people are realy nice, smiling a lot and enjoying the life even if it is difficut. it is just this lack of conversation… And i love chinese food.

Anyway, i have to take a decision soon where to go. My plan was going to arrive in los angeles very soon and cross south america via mexico. ehhh ! looking to the situation there and the virus, maybe i have to wait a little bit and see what happend there in few days. we, cyclist, go to very isolated places, and it is difficult to be carreful all the times.

I am here
